An Interview With Dr. Barker, A Qualified Dentist In Raleigh

What are the benefits of dental implants?

The benefits of implants are predictability, they allow for replacement of teeth without the need for removable prosthetics, unlike traditional bridges, they do not involve other teeth and they provide great strength and a high level of function.

How are dental implants placed?

They are placed surgically into a patients upper or lower jaw. A specific hole is made and the implant is then threaded to place and stabilized for a period of months to allow for bone to intimately grow to the surface through a process called osseointegration.

Why should a person consider dental implants?

Better function, preservation of bone, stability of restorations both fixed (crowns, bridges) and removable ( dentures), conservatism of adjacent teeth.

Is there discomfort involved?

Typically less discomfort than removing a tooth is involved immediately post surgically. Once healing has occurred, there is no residual discomfort.

How do I know if I am a good candidate for dental implants?

Consult with your dentists to discuss the options.

Who is a candidate for implants?

Most individuals are candidates. There are several medical conditions which decrease the predictability of implants. Those are diabetes, immunocompromised individuals, long term bisphosphonate usage, adrenal cortical insufficiency and smoking. Also an inavailability of bone or bone quality can preclude the use of implants.

How long does an implant last?

Studies show that dental implants in healthy individuals have approximately a 90-93% success rate over a 30 year period.

What are dental implants used for?

When a tooth is lost, dental implants allow for replacement of that tooth and the ability to restore the area to similar form and function as a natural tooth.

What are dental implants?

There are several forms of dental implants. Most implants are what are known as endosseous root form implants. These are designed to replace a tooth when it has been lost and to allow for a crown or bridge to attache to the implant to restore form and function. There are also implants used to secure removable dentures. The implant is placed in bone and integrates to the bone over a period of months. Once integrated, restoration of the implant occurs.

What are implants made of?

Typically medical grade titanium, although newer ceramic and zirconia implants are also available.
